UK Student Dependant Visa

A UK Student Dependant Visa allows spouses, partners, and children of a Student Visa holder to join them in the UK. However, this category underwent several changes in 2024 and currently not all Student visa holders are eligible to bring in their partners and children.
A student dependant visa is only eligible for main applicants studying a postgraduate course for a minimum period of 9 months or applicants on an international scholarship. Eligible family members include the partner(spouse/civil partner/unmarried partner) or dependent child.

It is crucial to prove you meet the eligibility requirements using adequate documentary evidence. Here are some important documents that must be included with your application –

• Passport and other Identity documents
• Proof of Knowledge of the English language
• T.B. test report (if applicable)
• Identity documents of the sponsor
• Sponsor’s Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies
• Proof of financial maintenance
• Proof of relationship being genuine and subsisting
• Proof of accommodation

You can either apply for an Administrative review to challenge the decision based on a caseworking error or reapply with stronger evidence and after addressing the refusal reasons. However, it is crucial to assess your options adequately as it could have a direct impact on your approval chances.

Yes, children can apply as dependants of a Student visa holder without the other parent applying along with them. However, it is crucial to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the main applicant has sole parental responsibility or provide evidence of shared parental responsibility.

It costs £490 to apply as a UK Student dependant, this is not inclusive of £1,035 as Immigration Health Surcharge for each year. Additional fees may also be levied if you opt for priority processing services.

Standard processing times are 3 weeks for an application made outside the UK and 8 weeks for applications submitted within the UK itself.

Yes, you can extend your visa in line with the main Student Visa holder if they extend their visa.

You cannot qualify for an Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) being on a Student dependant. You must switch to another route that leads to an ILR to be able to qualify.

If your sponsor switches to a visa route that leads to settlement, you will need to apply for a new dependant visa under their new route. You cannot continue to stay in the UK on a Student Dependant Visa if they no longer hold a Student Visa themselves.
