What is a UK marriage visitor visa?

A UK Marriage Visitor visa is a short-term visa for foreign nationals who want to come to the UK to marry or register a civil partnership – or to give notice of marriage/civil partnership – without intending to live in the UK afterward. It is explicitly for people who will be attending their own wedding or civil partnership ceremony at a licensed venue in the UK (e.g. a church, registry office or approved premises). You must intend to return home after the marriage. If you plan to settle in the UK after marrying, you would need to apply for a UK Spouse visa instead, but that requires a different application process and living outside the UK at the time of application.

While there is no minimum threshold for this category, proving sound financial circumstances is crucial to get an approval on your UK Marriage visitor visa. You will have to prove you have sufficient funds to support yourself throughout your stay in the UK, including covering accommodation and other expenses without relying on public funds.

Genuine relationships and intent to get married

You and your partner must be above 18 years of age and must be in a genuine relationship. This requirement serves as the make or break factor for several applications. There is no minimum duration of relationship to qualify for this requirement however, you must prove that there is a genuine intent to get married and that it is not a sham marriage. You must also prove an intent to marry or enter into a civil partnership within the visa’s validity (6 months). Lastly, it is important to prove that you will leave the UK and return to your home country after registering your marriage/civil partnership.

What is the duration of a UK marriage visitor visa?

A Marriage Visitor visa allows a single stay of up to 6 months in the UK. You must marry or register your civil partnership within 6 months of arriving under this visa. There is no option to extend this visa beyond 6 months or to apply for a longer-term marriage visa.

How long is a UK marriage visitor visa valid for?

The visa’s validity period corresponds to the 6-month maximum stay. You must use the visa to enter the UK and complete your marriage/civil partnership within the 6-month timeframe. The visa cannot be extended or renewed in the UK.

What is the cost of applying for a UK marriage visitor visa?

The application fee for a Marriage Visitor visa is £127. This fee must be paid when you apply online. (Note: faster processing services—such as 5-day or 24-hour decisions—may be available at an extra charge.)

What documents are needed for a UK marriage visitor visa?

You must submit a valid passport or travel document (valid for your entire stay, with blank pages). In addition, key documents include:

  • Wedding/civil partnership plans: Evidence of your intention to marry in the UK. This can include provisional confirmation with the UK marriage register office, a booking confirmation or contract with the venue, emails with the venue or celebrant, proof of any deposits or fees paid for the ceremony, and similar documentation.
  • Proof of eligibility: If you were previously married or in a civil partnership, you must show that you are free to marry again (e.g. a divorce decree absolute or a spouse’s death certificate).
  • Personal circumstances: As with any visitor visa, you should provide proof of finances (bank statements, payslips), evidence of employment or studies, and any ties to your home country to show you will leave the UK after the marriage.
  • Venue documentation: Some applications benefit from a letter from the venue or officiant confirming your booking date.
  • Translation: Any non-English/Welsh documents must be fully translated and certified.

The Home Office guidance specifically notes you must provide details of the marriage and proof of payment towards its cost. It also emphasizes submitting any additional evidence relevant to your case.

What can I do on a UK marriage visitor visa?

On a Marriage Visitor visa, you are allowed to:

  • Marry or enter into a civil partnership: Complete your wedding or civil partnership ceremony in the UK at a properly licensed venue, within 6 months of arriving.
  • Give notice: Lodge notice of marriage or civil partnership at a UK register office (if applicable).
  •  Transit: You may transit through the UK to another country during the validity of the visa

In short, the visa is specifically for attending and finalizing your marriage or civil partnership. No other long-term activities are permitted on this visa.

What activities are not allowed on a UK marriage visitor visa?

A Marriage Visitor visa carries similar restrictions to a Standard Visitor visa, with some specific points: you cannot:

  • Claim public funds or benefits: You have no access to UK benefits under this visa.
  • Bring dependants: Family members (spouse/partner, children) cannot accompany you unless they have their own visa. Each person must apply separately (e.g. as standard visitors).
  • Extend or switch visas: You must leave the UK when your visa expires. You cannot extend this visa nor switch into another immigration category (e.g. a Spouse visa) from within the UK.
  • Work or study: No employment is permitted (beyond minimal activities directly related to your overseas business, such as attending meetings). You also cannot undertake any formal study.
  • Live long-term via visits: You may not use repeated visits to effectively live in the UK. If you intend to spend lengthy periods in the UK beyond the marriage ceremony, you must qualify under a different visa.

Violation of these rules can jeopardize future UK travel.

What to do if a UK marriage visitor visa is refused?

If your Marriage Visitor visa application is refused, examine the refusal letter closely for the reasons given. As with standard visit visas, there is generally no right of appeal to a tribunal for a marriage visitor visa refusal. The letter should state whether you have the option of an administrative review (usually only if you applied from overseas and a review is explicitly offered). If eligible, you must request an administrative review promptly (within the deadline). Otherwise, the main remedy is to reapply with additional evidence addressing the refusal reasons.

Conroy Baker Ltd. can assist by reviewing the refusal decision, advising on whether an administrative review is possible, and preparing any subsequent application. We will help you strengthen your case – for example by clarifying the purpose of the visit, improving documentation of your wedding plans and financial situation, and ensuring strict compliance with immigration rules.

Can I switch from a UK marriage visitor visa to a spouse visa within the UK?

No. UK immigration rules do not allow switching from a Marriage Visitor visa (or any visitor visa) to a spouse/partner or other settlement route from within the UK. The Marriage Visitor visa explicitly prohibits extension or change of status. If you wish to settle in the UK as the spouse of a British or settled person, you must apply for a Spouse visa from outside the UK after your marriage, following the proper procedures.

Conroy Baker Ltd can advise on the transition to a spouse visa, but it cannot be done while on a marriage visitor visa in the UK.
